How To Care For A Bonsai Tree If Turning Yellow | Bonsai Tree Gardener
Yellow leaves doesn't always mean you have a problem. Some trees, some always green included, have yellow leaves at a certain time of the year. The autumn is, of course, when the leaves on the expired trees change the color and fall. Evergreens like the Chinese Elms and Serissas can change the color during and after the winter period. How do you know something's wrong? Is this your bonsai deciduo and if so, what time of the year is it? If it is not autumn or your bonsai is always green, which of the leaves are changing the color? Old leaves inside the tree, new leaves everywhere or both? It is quite common for trees, especially the evergreen, to shed old leaves that are tired and replace them with new ones. If, however, all the leaves are turning including the new shoots, then there is a problem. Please note: A bonsai is a living work of art and sometimes seasonal changes can be experienced. Please do not worry if, within 2-3 weeks of delivery, your bonsai shows signs of yellowing or falling leaves (usually older leaves and not new tips of growth). Not all bonsai exhibit these symptoms, but it is not especially rare in Chinese Elms during early spring. The fall of the leaf is often followed quickly by a period of growth. Within a few weeks you should notice new bright green leaves that begin to develop; these are often slightly larger in size but reduce with time and pruning. I'm in New York, he hasn't. He moved from the window. The temperature is about 68 degrees If it's autumn cause, will all grow? bonsaidirect - 9 December 2016 Dear Cheryl, Thanks for your consultation. I'm sorry the gardenia isn't a plant I know. It's very nice but we don't cultivate it so I feel like I can't help, greetings Bonsai Direct Black Aish - 13 February 2017 Dear Lord I received a Chinese Elm as an acquired gift from you about 4 weeks ago. (January 2017) I have read your information that is useful, but I am concerned that many leaves have fallen (for example, only 40% remain in the tree). The tree is located in a window chair for the morning sun. The room is very hot (from 20 C) tree is watered regularly (2 to 3 times per week) and the pot is in a pebble tray usually with water covering the rocks, however the leaves that were in the tree when I recited it continue to fall. (There are some new shoots and very small new leaves.) Is this normal and I worry unnecessarily or am I doing something wrong? I'm worried there's no leaves at this rate! Regards Nick Aish bonsaidirect - 13 February 2017 Hey, Nick. I think this is perfectly normal. The bonsai will be re-aclimatizing and you can also get the seasonal leaf drop when it leaves the winter to spring. It should stabilize in a couple of weeks, and then you'll have a lot of new shoots. If you are worried you are welcome to send us a photo Thank you very much. Sarah... Fran - 27 May 2017 Hey, I just bought 2 Chinese elm bonsai. They were delivered to the post. One of the blooming trees, green leaves and new shoots. The other, however, has been leaving leaves since the day it came. The leaves turn yellow and then fall. There's no sign of mold or red spider or other mistakes I've seen. The tree is practically without mild right now. I thought it would be under irrigation. I've had the trees for a week. I've been watered once, and I've bathed once and given bonsai food in the bathroom. Both times the soil was dry. No improvement. It is not in the light of the direct sun, its heat (I understand you came from a green house). There are no signs of new growths, no new shoots or leaves that develop anywhere. I'm not sure what to do. As I say, the other tree is thriving. Any advice would be highly appreciated bonsaidirect - 30 May 2017 Hello, Fran. It is very common for bonsai to behave differently even if they are the same species. It is also common for a Chinese Elm to drop leaves in the first 2-3 weeks while re-acclimatizing and does not mean there is anything wrong. Do the leaves go dry and crunchy or change color? Greetings Sarah. Fran - 30 May 2017 Hi, Sarah, thank you for your answer. The leaves turn yellow and then fall. I moved the tree to a different position and the fall of leaves seems to have stopped. However, some of the remaining leaves have some signs of going brown and crispy – not all the leaf, just some parts of it. The tree is dishonored once a day at night, as well as watering twice a week. Is it possible that they need more water – two baths of five minutes a week and twice a day – tomorrow and night? Fran bonsaidirect - 31 May 2017 Hello, Fran. The weather has been much warmer. Bonsai may need more frequent irrigation. As soon as the ground feels as wet water well. We are watering daily at this time but we are under glass! All right. Sarah. Chris - 29 May 2017 I have a tea tree that has had it for 3 1/2 yrs now from your website. I've repoted a year ago and everything's fine until a month ago. Its leaves have begun to become yellow and fall from the tree. This hasn't been a usual trait of him. From the United Kingdom bonsaidirect - 30 May 2017 Dear Chris, If this is just the old leaves (and not the new tips of growth) I suspect this is seasonal. It is not rare during spring for a bonsai to lose some of the old leaves, this is followed by a period of growth. If you think this is unlikely, please send me a picture of your bonsai? Thank you very much. Sarah (sarah@bonsaidirect.co.uk) Mart65 - 3 January 2018 Hello – any advice would be very appreciated – I have a small pepper tree (Sweet Plumb?) that was absolutely good until a few days ago (traditional 2 on Christmas Eve). Now one is really suffering, the leaves are turning almost white and complete small members and the leaves are falling!! I have watered correctly, kept in a wide window sieve and only watered when the soil seems not very humid – only what I have done since buying our Bonsai is adding a bit of Japanese soil – Akadama... Can you advise? Thanks in advance bonsaidirect - 4 January 2018 Hi, Martin. I haven't heard of a white pepper tree before – please send me a picture. Thank you. Sarah. Mart65 - 3 January 2018 Apologies one and all; my Bonsai is a pepper tree -Zanthoxylum Piperitum - not sweet Plumb 😉Looooong day thanks again Martin Martin - 4 January 2018 Sarah Thank you so much for clarifying my Bonsai concerns, very appreciated. Great forum by the way! It's always good to know that there are useful and knowledgeable people around 🙂The best Martin bonsaidirect - 8 January 2018 Thank you for your comments Martin, They are very appreciated, Happy New Year Sarah. Dan - 15 January 2018 Hi. Could you give me some advice, please? I have a Chinese tree from Elm (bonsai). And I'm feeding the bonsai focus and I've noticed today that my leaves have begun to spin yellow and drop is that normal or I should be worried. Also how often I should feed my tree and alternate between smooth water. Thank you very much. bonsaidirect - 16 January 2018 Hi, Dan. Are the old leaves (and not the new growth tips) that are yellow and falling? If this is the case is the seasonal drop of leaf and will be followed by a growth boost 4-6 weeks later. Please check the water daily and only the water when the soil is barely wet. We feed weekly or fortnightly with water containing food. I hope these videos on irrigation and feeding will help you: Greetings Sarah. Aspen - February 9, 2019 Hello! I have a Bonsai Ginseng tree (Ficus). I've had it for a little over a year and a half. It had been fine, but then the leaves began to spin yellow. This may have been because I forgot to rule it for a longer period of time, but I made sure to re-regulate it. It's been a bit of time, and some of the new and old leaves are becoming yellow or simply brown and wrinkled. Is he going to be all right? Do you have any suggestions to help? I'm a little worried/nervous. Thank you so much! bonsaidirect - 15 February 2019 Hey, Aspen, do you keep this out? If so, it could be seasonal. If the leaves have become crispy, this will be caused by insufficient water. I hope this helps. Paul Deering - 6 May 2019 Hi, I have a new Chinese bonsai Elm for my birthday in late April. My brother recovered it before he gave it to me, and he planted it with the wrong kind of compost. I recovered it again, with proper bonsai floor and now sits in my window in front of a mirror, the room is perhaps 16 degrees of celicius. I also think I could have prayed at first. I gave it three days in a row, even when the ground was still wet. Now some new leaves become yellow. Please, could you help me? Should I keep it out of direct sunlight after repotting? Is it okay to keep it inside or should I leave it outdoors? Is it normal for some yellow-turned leaves when moving to a new environment? Thank you very much. P bonsaidirect - 7 May 2019 Dear Paul, I suspect bonsai is simply reaclimatizing. Please make sure that the old soil and new soil stay wet and not too humid. During irrigation for 3 days you will have no harmful effect for what you always have. I suspect that the old leaves are yellowed and fall (this should not affect the new tips of growth). At this time of year new leaves should emerge in about 4 weeks and grow very quickly. I hope this helps. Best wishes Sarah – Bonsai Direct Reply Your email address will not be published.
