Destined for the now award-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show, this innovation was put on the plant of the year, and surely would have caught a top-three placement! Well, being the impatient I am, I couldn't bear to be without the UK's most important floor contest this year, so I actually did one of my own on a recent QVC TV show. The small Jacaranda 'Bonsai Blue' was and won the contest, with 28% of the votes!! Often seen in exotic holidays in tropical or subtropical areas of the world, Jacaranda are usually grown in colder regions as a foliage plant... pretty, but disappointing! However, now you can enjoy plant blooms only 70cm in height! The plants are max out to 1.5 meters and are easily manageable against a hot wall or in patio containers that can be given only a little winter protection. How was this plant created? Kiyoshi Sakai is a Japanese grower, for many years cultivating citrus plants as a pastime. Sakai-San is 84. Sakai-San also has a secret love; the rich purple joy of the Jacaranda tree! He grew many young plants and enjoyed his gorgeous foliage, but in 1995 a plant was blooming when he was super young! Sakai-San This was, of course, a revelation! Jacaranda usually blooms after 10 years of growth, and needs to be much more developed before producing those purple beauty clouds! You can imagine the interest this new plant created! By grafting this fast blooming on the basis of a standard Jacaranda tree, Sakai-San knew that he could create the first dwarf in the Jacaranda world, which would naturally be called 'Bonsai Blue'! And, there is no slowing down of Sakai-San and her breeding journey. It has also found a unique variety of pink flowers, in addition to a cylindrical shape type, both part of this development program and perhaps get to your garden very soon! What's different about this plant? This exciting botanical development has created a new category for the beloved Jacaranda. He's turned it into a small tree for an urban space. In years to come, we could see them covering the streets of Europe and cooler climates, with purple blossom on a metre high! 'Bonsai Blue' is tolerant of heat and drought once established.
